1. Ellison Residence
Introducing the Ellison Residence, a 620m2 (6,673 sqft) luxury home situated on a challenging hillside site overlooking downtown Queenstown. This unique property has been designed by Dunedin-based McCoy & Wixon Architects. Project360 have been engaged by the building contractor, Nevis Group, to provide project consultation, value engineering and quantity surveying.
The 3 ½ level home (level 2 comprising two staggered levels) with rooftop parking has been successfully engineered to integrate with a topographically challenging site. Its architectural design incorporates varying angles that maximize natural light while distributing shade across the sites contours to stunning effect.
The exterior is a blend of high grade cedar, in-situ concrete, schist and exposed structural steel. Cedar cladding wraps the entire building blending harmoniously with its surrounds. Each level looks over a cedar clad roof complimenting the sweeping views towards Lake Wakatipu. The building’s form and terracing follows the site's natural contours, embracing rather than dominating the topography. The staggered design sits well within the height planes, respecting the surrounding vistas.
Work on site began two months ago. The extent of earthworks demanded high level structural engineering by Hadley Consultants. Excavation and retaining wall construction was then undertaken by Crom-Dig, with support from Complete Reinforcing to install the reinforcing steel into the foundations, and Watertight Systems which fitted the waterproof membrane to the slab. Queenstown Plumbing is currently preparing the site for utilities and NJ Blocklaying have begun to lay the blockwork at the lowest level.
Stay tuned for our second Ellison Residence blog which will report on progress made and detail engineering challenges and solutions.
